Saving for a goal
An amount by a date: counting what is already saved and an assumed return, what to put aside each month — and, if that is more than you can, how long it would really take.
The return is assumed. Savings accounts pay less than this after inflation; investments can pay more and can lose. Plan on the money you put in, and treat growth as a bonus.
Your रू 1,00,000 grows to रू 1,48,984.57 by the date. The remaining रू 8,51,015.43 needs रू 11,582.09 a month — रू 6,94,925.40 from you over the period, and रू 2,05,074.60 from growth if the return holds.
At रू 8,000 a month the goal arrives after 6 years 8 months rather than 5 years. That is a real answer too — a later date is better than a plan that stops in month three.
| Year | Saved | Of goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2,52,496.11 | 25% |
| 2 | 4,17,649.33 | 42% |
| 3 | 5,96,510.18 | 60% |
| 4 | 7,90,216.40 | 79% |
| 5 | 10,00,000 | 100% |
- Try 0% to see what the plan needs if the return does not come. If that number is also possible, the goal is safe.
- If the monthly amount is out of reach, move the date rather than abandon the goal — "More options" shows how far.
- A constant 8.00% a year, every month, for the whole period — an assumption, not a promise.
- Each amount goes in at the end of the month and earns from the next.
- No tax on the return, no fees, no missed months.
- The goal amount does not rise with prices — if it will, put a higher figure.
A worked example
The form starts with these figures (in NPR) so you can see how it works before typing your own. They are made up — nobody's real numbers appear here.
Questions people ask
What return should I assume?
A savings account: 5–7%, less than inflation. A balanced investment: perhaps 8–10%, not guaranteed. Try the number you believe, then 0% — if the plan works at 0%, it works.
The monthly amount is more than I can save.
Then the honest options are a later date or a smaller goal. Enter what you can in "More options" and the page shows the real date. A plan you cannot keep is not a plan.
Should the money already saved be counted?
Yes — it grows for the whole period, which is why a lakh today does more than a lakh in year four. Only count what is genuinely set aside for this goal.
What about inflation?
A wedding in five years costs more than one today. This page takes the goal figure as you enter it; if the cost will rise, enter the future cost, not today's.
Do you keep what I type here?
No. The figures are used to work out the answer and are not stored, and never appear in the page address.
These are estimates. The figures depend entirely on the numbers you enter and on assumptions that are listed on every result. They are not financial advice, and a bank, employer or authority may use different rules. Check anything important with them before you decide.
We do not keep your figures. Salary, debt and savings you type here are used to work out the answer and are not stored, and never appear in the page address. The only thing remembered is your country and language choice (a small cookie), so the currency can be suggested next time — never a figure you typed. Anonymous counters record that a calculation happened, not what it was.
